A powerful detached tribe of the Iroquoian family is the Cherokee Tribe when the whites first arrived, the Cherokee controlled a mountain region 40,000 square miles, including parts of eastern Tennessee, northern Alabama , Georgia, western Virginia and also western North Carolina. The Cherokee tribe was one of the largest tribes in what is now the United States. The Cherokee tribe lived in villages. The villages on the upper reaches of the Savannah River in South Carolina and Georgia were the "lower Cherokee" . Indians that lived in the Tennessee River Valley were the " Upper Cherokee" the Tennessee River Valley is now the state of Tennessee. The most important villages were located among "The Middle Cherokee". They were most important because of the size and the prestige. The Cherokee did not usually use clay to make baskets instead they used baskets that were made out of green strips of tender branches, often from oak trees. When it was time for a girl to become a adult, one had to find a companion outside of the clan. Every boy and every girl had to get there grandmothers permission to be together. If a boy wanted to get married to a girl then he had to go kill a deer and bring it to the girls house and if she cooked it then it meant that they were engaged. On the day of the wedding the boy had to build a fire and ask his clansmen to join him. When the fire went out he bid his friends farewell and took the embers to the sacred circle, where the priest used them to start the " marriage fire." As that happens at the same time the bride is bathed and dressed her hair with corn pollen to make the marriage fertile. When the marriage fire was ready the boy and girl stood on opposite sides . After the two clans exchanged gifts then the couple entered the sacred circle, and then the priest announced to all of the guests and spirits present that "Ni go di sgs di" continued. Which that means " This is the way it is". The newly married couple then moves into the house of the bride's mother.

The Catawba's are original residents of North and South Carolina. They have there own goverment, laws, police and other services just like a small country. In the past, the Catawba tribe was ruled by a chief from a leading clan. Though today they are governed by a tribal council whose members are elected. The Catawba people speak English today but they used to speak there regular Catawba Language. The men were usually hunters but sometimes they had to go to war to protect there families. Women on the other hand usually did most of the farming and cooking while also taking care of the children. The Catawba people lived in villages and small farm plots and the houses had wooden frames and bark walls.
The Tuscarora Tribe
The Coastal Plain was dominated in the 1500's by one tribe, the Tuscarora. They originally lived in North Carolina near the Neuse and Tar Rivers. Tuscarora has a language and it is the Iroquoian language of the American Southeast. Today only a few elderly people speak this language, but some of the Tuscarora children are trying to learn their ancestral language too. If you did not know, Tuscarora means the "hemp gatherers". The Tuscarora and many other Native tribes were not considered by the white settlers to own their land that they claimed. They were sometimes shot for trasspassing there own tribal lands. In 1711, the tribe went to war because of those issues. Then came John Barnwell. What was supposed to be the end of the war, having made little profit off of the victories against the Indian Tribes, Barnwell violated his own treaty and took many of the Indians to be sold as slaves. This began another war in 1713. After they fought and lost 2 wars over their territory in North Carolina they began to move North with the five Nations and they also shared the Iroquoian language and the customs.

The Algonquins are original natives of the southern Quebec and eastern Ontario, in Canada. The tribe speaks the language called Algonquin which is a language that is musical and has very complicated verbs in it. Algonquin children do the same as other children; they play with each other, go to school, and help around the house . Most of the children like to go hunting and fishing with there fathers. A womans role is to cook, gather plants to eat, and take care of the children. The mens role is to hunt and go to war if needed to protect their families. Both parents participated in storytelling, crafts, and music. For most of the years the Algonquin people lived in settled villages or birchbark houses. These houses were called waginogans or wigwams.
