The Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge
In 1775 after the death of John Harvey other people such as Cornelius Harnett and Richard Caswell took over or led the province. The people known as the Provincial Congress created something called a loyalty oath for everyone to take, authorized the enlistment of soldiers to fight in the war , and also issued money to pay for everything. The people called the province raised two regiments which were groups of soldiers for the General George Washington's Continental army. After all of this happened the two people named James Moore and Robert Howe asked for the regiments which later they both later became a general in the army. By the early 1776, North Carolinians were fighting against themselves about the was against the British. A important person named Governor Martin had run away to a ship off the Cape Fear coast. He also encourages people who had recently arrived named the Highland Scots to march on Wilmington to join the British invasion of to the two Carolina colonies. When the Highlanders had signed the oath they were guarenteed to keep their word and fight because they signed the oath saying they would be loyal to the king. That February they walked from Cross Creek to Wilmington. At Moore's Creek Bridge twenty miles north of Wilmington the Whig forces blocked the Tories Path. The Whigs removed all of the planks from the bridge and also greased the support beams. The Highlanders tryed to slip and slide across the bridge for fifteen minutes. Many were shot and killed more than fifty of them actually. Then they soon retreated and Colonel Moore chased them and also stealing there arms and money. This was celebrated as well as American victory in the southern colonies.
Battle of Camden
In the month of May on the 12th a person named Major-General Horatio Gates was made the commander of the Southern Department by the Congress. He joined his troops on July 25. Instead of building his troops into a army he decided to go on ahead and make his way to Camden. By the time they were there Cornwallis had decided to reinforce his position at Camden. Even though he was still outnumbered Cornwallis decided to set off his own attack and led his troops to the American Force. Gates had now at this time realized he had made a huge mistake. The commander of the British right wing name Colonel James Webster had now made the most impressive manoeuvre. After leaving his people left to to make the attack on the American regulators instead of letting them pursue of the already defeated militia. This was a bloody battle and it was also fought within 8 miles of Camden , South Carolina. The Americans had lost alot of people and also had alot of people that were seriosly hurt. This battle ended with a victory to the The British which was very important to them in the Revolutionary War.
