Slave Code

The slave code is defined as the social, economic, and the physical place of the slaves in North Carolina. Slaves were not allowed " the pursuit of happiness" which was promised in the Declaration or Independance. First they lacked freedom of movement this meant that they were not allowed to go wherever they pleased unless there master gave them permission to do so. When a slave was seen on the road by a white man or female they could ask for his pass this was a written note that allowed such travel. They could if they wanted to attend church on Sunday , go to muster day or militia day, or even court week. Some slaves could pretend to be free but this time came on Christmas. Quite often the head slave would be given the masters top and be allowed to "boss ole massa" as the presents were being handed out. A slave could also not legally know how to read or write. A slave could not marry under state law, either to another slave or a free person. Sometimes slaves could earn there own money and this was only when they were not assigned tasks or duties by the master. Also in the old days the smart masters let the slaves sell there own labor which eased in some ways the poverty that went to slavery. Few slaves could allow the control of their own time that they spent in the fields and doing other duties.

Huckleberry Finn
This is a young boy that is not just tough like most young boys but also caring. The people he starts living with trys to teach him manners and religion and also send him to school. Later on he faked his death and they blamed it on Jim who was a run away slave. Later Huck is so sneaky he does some work in a nearby town by pretending (poorly) to be a girl. "He" stills some things from a woman and is caught and they know that Huck is there. Through the rough times many things happened including Jim getting arrested and people tryed to hang him he also was a slave at a plantation and was beaten many times. Huck was so worried about doing the wrong thing and forgot that he was trying to get Jim to a free county. In the end of the story Huck gets shot trying to run from the people that tryed to hurt them he then is running and Jim trys to save him but by the time he is carrying him to get help he is "tackled" by many people and they started to hang him but a woman came and told them that if they did not let them both go that she would shoot so they let them go and Huck was saved as well as Jim they were both took back to a house and Huck received care and also received $500 and gave it to Jim and he bought his family back because he was a free slave. This was not just a touching story it was also very good.Mark Twain - Adventures of Huckleberry Fin
