Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was a network of people who helped fugitive slaves escape to the North and to Canada. This was not ran by a single person or organization it was actually ran by many individuals. The Underground Railroad had effectively moved hundreds of slaves northward each year according to one estimate, the South lost 100,000 slaves between 1810 and 1850. The organized system that assisted runaway slaves seemed to have begun towards the end of the 18th century. George Washington actually complained about how one of his runaway slaves were helped and this took place in the year 1786. For a slave running away to the North was very hard there were many steps including actually escaping from the slaveholder. The fugitives would also not just travel by foot but also by the train and boat. There was a lady named Harriet Tubman who made 19 trips into the South and also escorte 300 slaves to what they called freedom. The Underground Railroad was very important to many people.
